Banasura climbed Mount Kailash and seized Shiva in a mighty embrace, so that the Lord of the Mountain swayed like a boat tossing on water. The clatter of his helmet, armour, and mace rang out loudly on all sides. At that moment Umiya — Parvati — was seized with fear in her heart, and she went and bowed at Shankara's feet, crying, 'O Shivaraya, why should Parvati be afraid? It is only Banasura, the king, who has come.' Shiva replied, 'I have already given this son of the blind demon the kingdom of Shonitpur and a thousand arms upon it — what more has he come to ask for?' Banasura answered, 'My Lord, it is true that you gave me a thousand arms, yet I ask you now for one worthy opponent, powerful enough to fight me in battle. Come, let us two clash — you yourself stand before my eyes!' Shiva flared with anger and said, 'Shame on you, wicked one — what are you saying? Give up this foolish stubbornness.' Then, having heard and recognised the demon, the Lord Shiva spoke in his wrathful Rudra form and declared the future: 'A prince as mighty as you will be born, and he will sever your arms. In the twelfth year a child will come into the world, cut off your arms, and drive you away. On that day a great and terrible war will take place, the demons will be swept from the face of the earth, and all of this will come to pass on your account. A daughter named Okha will be born — not in my house but in yours — Okha, the one of singular destiny. Whoever marries that daughter will be counted as my own son; and now hear my solemn vow, Banasura — you, with your twelve arms, will be reduced to the state of a twelve-year-old child, and the boy who fights you will drive you out and take Shonitpur itself. That boy is the darling of Gokul village, the child of Nanda and Yashoda, known as Kanhaiya — his name is Shri Krishna, and this is my oath.' Having spoken thus, Mahadeva summoned Banasura, established him in the city of Shonitpur, granted him twelve arms, and installed Okha there, commanding that a fitting bridegroom be found for her. Banasura went from house to house, greatly satisfied, and returning from Shonitpur he offered praises to Shukracharya — and what praises those were, I shall now tell.

बाणासुर कैलाश पर्वत पर चढ़ गया और शिवजी को कसकर बाँहों में भींच लिया — जैसे जल में नाव डोलती है, वैसे ही गिरिनाथ डोलने लगे। उसके शिरस्त्राण, कवच और गदा का कड़कड़ाट चारों ओर गूँज उठा। उसी क्षण उमियाजी — पार्वती — के मन में भय समा गया और वे शंकर के चरणों में जाकर नमीं, बोलीं — 'हे शिवराय, पार्वती क्यों डरे? यह तो बाणासुर राजा आया है।' शिवजी ने कहा — 'इस अंध असुर के पुत्र को मैंने शोणितपुर का राज्य दिया, ऊपर से हज़ार भुजाएँ दीं — अब और क्या माँगने आया है?' बाणासुर बोला — 'स्वामी, सहस्र भुजाएँ दीं, यह सत्य है; किन्तु अब मुझे एक ऐसा वीर दीजिए जो युद्ध करने में समर्थ हो — आइए, हम दोनों लड़ें, आप स्वयं मेरी दृष्टि के सामने हैं!' शिवजी क्रोध से भर उठे और बोले — 'धिक्कार है तुझे, दुष्ट! यह क्या बोल रहा है? यह मूर्खतापूर्ण हठ छोड़।' फिर असुर की पहचान सुनकर रुद्ररूप भगवान शिव ने भविष्यवाणी की — 'तेरे जैसा एक बलवान कुँवर जन्म लेगा जो तेरी भुजाएँ काट डालेगा। बारहवें वर्ष वह बालक जन्म लेगा, तेरी भुजाएँ छेदकर तुझे भगा देगा। उस दिन महाभारत जैसा भीषण संग्राम होगा, दैत्य भूमंडल से चले जाएँगे — यह सब तेरे कारण होगा। ओखा नाम की एक कन्या जन्म लेगी — मेरे घर नहीं, तेरे घर — ओखा, वह भाग्यशाली पुत्री। जो वीर उस कन्या से विवाह करेगा, वह मेरा कुँवर कहलाएगा; और अब सुन मेरी प्रतिज्ञा, बाणासुर — बारह भुजाओं वाला तू बारह वर्ष के बालक जैसा हो जाएगा, और वह बालक तुझसे युद्ध करके तुझे खदेड़ देगा, शोणितपुर भी छीन लेगा। गोकुल गाँव का वह कन्हैया — नंद और यशोदा का लाडला — श्रीकृष्ण नाम से जाना जाता है, यही मेरी प्रतिज्ञा है।' यह सुनकर महादेवजी ने बाणासुर को बुलाया, शोणितपुर नगरी स्थापित की, बारह भुजाएँ प्रदान कीं, ओखा को वहाँ स्थापित किया और आदेश दिया कि उसके लिए योग्य वर खोजा जाए। बाणासुर घर-घर जाकर अत्यंत संतुष्ट हुआ और शोणितपुर से लौटकर उसने शुक्राचार्य की स्तुति की — वह स्तुति कैसी थी, अब वह बताता हूँ।
