Banasura

Banasura is one of the most formidable antagonists in Mahakavi Premanand's *Okhaharan*, the celebrated seventeenth-century Gujarati narrative poem retelling the story of Aniruddha and Usha. A mighty demon king and devoted worshipper of Shiva, Banasura is the father of the princess Usha, whose secret love for Aniruddha — grandson of Lord Krishna — sets the entire epic conflict in motion. His thousand arms, granted as a boon, make him a figure of terrifying power, and his pride in that strength drives much of the drama that unfolds across the poem.

When Banasura discovers that Aniruddha has been spirited into his palace through Usha's enchantment, his fury ignites a war that draws in not only Krishna and the Yadava forces but also the great god Shiva himself, who fights to defend his devotee. Premanand renders Banasura with characteristic vividness — neither a simple villain nor a wholly unsympathetic figure — capturing the tension between his fierce paternal loyalty, his devotional pride, and the inevitable humbling that awaits even the mightiest before divine grace.
