The rains had passed and the joyful games of the season had come to an end; after much happiness, the month of Ashvin arrived. With Ashvin came the night of Sharad Purnima — the jewel-bright full moon, the finest night of the month of Aaso. In the moonlight, men and women sat together on swings, laughing and playing, enjoying every kind of pleasure. It was then that the king's guards observed Princess Okha and were startled: where had the girlish innocence of her face gone? Okha now looked like a woman. Chitralekha was nowhere to be seen, and Okha stood alone — her eyes red, her body full and bloomed. As she walked she covered her chest, and there were marks of nails on her skin; on her lips were the unmistakable marks of a man's teeth. Troubled by what he had seen, the guard went at once to the minister Kaubhanda and reported everything. Kaubhanda rose and went before Banasura, the lord of the asuras, and with folded hands said: 'My king, listen — this is a matter of worldly shame, a stain upon us; how does one utter words that cut the tongue to speak? Yet I must tell you: your young daughter has become a woman.' Hearing this, Banasura fell from his seat in shock. He raged greatly and said: 'The flagpole fell — that was merely an accident! Minister, hear the truth: Shiva had foretold that when my banner falls, know that an enemy has been born. Go now, minister — find out the state of my daughter, and bring her home quietly, without anyone knowing.' The minister rose, took wise and trusted men with him, and stood below Okha's upper chamber, calling up to her. Kaubhanda called out: 'Okha, show yourself — where has Chitralekha gone? Come, the king summons you.' Okha trembled from within, her heart lurching with dread; she whispered to herself: 'My lord, what will happen now? A great calamity has come upon us.' She cried out in a panic: 'Do not speak, my lord, do not show yourself!' Her face had gone pale, and her eyes filled with tears. Deeply distressed, she scrambled to her feet, her banana-soft feet stumbling, and in her haste she threw on her bodice inside out without even fastening it. She came and stood at the window; Kaubhanda called to the princess with reassuring words: 'Where has Chitralekha gone? You look alone, child. Where has your girlish look gone? Banasura will be furious.' Okha shrank into herself, hiding her face, and asked: 'Who is there in the house? Tell me the truth.' Pressing her hand to her throat to hide the marks of a man's teeth, pulling her shawl tighter, Okha spoke in broken, evasive words: 'Chitralekha is unwell and has lain down to rest; I am distressed and troubled, my eyes are full of tears.' The minister replied: 'Okha, enough of this pretense — come down at once, or we shall climb up and inspect the chamber ourselves. Your burden will be broken open; knowing this, come down — the king is furious beyond measure.'

वर्षा ऋतु बीत गई और रंग-रंगीले खेल-उत्सव समाप्त हो गए; बहुत सुख भोगने के बाद अश्विन मास आ पहुँचा। अश्विन आया तो शरद पूर्णिमा की रात भी आई — माणेक जैसी उजली पूनम, आसो मास की सबसे उत्तम रात। चाँद की किरणों में स्त्री-पुरुष झूलों पर बैठे थे, हँसी-मज़ाक करते, तरह-तरह के विलास में मगन। तभी राजा के रक्षकों की नज़र राजकुमारी Okha पर पड़ी और वे चौंक उठे — उसका कन्यारूप कहाँ गया? Okha अब एक स्त्री दिखती है। Chitralekha कहीं नज़र नहीं आ रही, Okha अकेली खड़ी है — आँखें लाल हैं, देह खिली-फली है। चलते समय वह अपना वक्ष ढाँपती है, शरीर पर नखों के घाव हैं, और उसके अधरों पर किसी पुरुष के दाँतों के निशान साफ़ दिखते हैं। यह सब देखकर सेवक चला गया और मंत्री Kaubhanda के पास जाकर सारा हाल कह सुनाया। प्रधान Kaubhanda उठा और असुरराज Banasura के पास पहुँचा; हाथ जोड़कर बोला: 'राजाजी, सुनिए — यह बात लौकिक लाज की है, हम पर कलंक लगाने वाली है; जीभ कटे ऐसे वचन कैसे कहें? फिर भी कहना पड़ेगा — आपकी बालिका अब नारी हो गई है।' यह सुनते ही Banasura आसन से लुढ़क पड़ा। वह बहुत क्रोधित हुआ और बोला: 'ध्वज टूट गिरा — वह तो अनायास दुर्घटना थी! मंत्री, सच्ची बात सुनो — Shiva ने कहा था कि जब तेरी ध्वजा गिरे, तब जानना कि कोई शत्रु उत्पन्न हो गया है। जाओ, मंत्री, पुत्री का हाल देखो; किसी को पता न चले, ऐसे उसे घर ले आओ।' प्रधान उठा, साथ में समझदार लोगों को लेकर चला; Okha के माळिये के नीचे खड़े होकर बोला। Kaubhanda ने पुकारा: 'Okha जी, दर्शन दीजिए — Chitralekha कहाँ गई? चलिए, राजा का बुलावा है।' Okha भीतर से थर-थर काँप उठी, दिल धक् से रह गया; मन में बोली: 'नाथ, अब क्या होगा? बड़ी मुसीबत आ गई।' उसने घबराकर कहा: 'रुकिए, मत बोलिए — नाथ, दर्शन मत दीजिएगा!' उसका चेहरा उड़ गया, आँखें आँसुओं से भर आईं। Okha बहुत व्याकुल हो गई; उठी, केले जैसे कोमल चरण ठोकती, बिना कसे-बाँधे उतावली में कंचुकी उलटी पहन ली। खिड़की पर आकर खड़ी हो गई; Kaubhanda ने अभय वचन देकर कुँवरी को बुलाया: 'Chitralekha कहाँ गई? तू अकेली दिखती है, बालिके। कन्यारूप कहाँ गया? Banasura क्रोधित होंगे।' Okha शरीर सिकोड़ती, मुँह छुपाती बोली: 'घर में कौन है? मुझे सच बताइए।' गले पर हाथ रखकर पुरुष के दाँतों के निशान छुपाती, ओढ़नी खींचती, Okha ने टूटी-फूटी बात कही: 'Chitralekha की तबीयत ठीक नहीं है, वह सो गई है; मैं व्याकुल हूँ, दुखी हूँ, आँखें भर आई हैं।' मंत्री बोला: 'Okha, बहुत बहाने हो गए — नीचे उतरो, नहीं तो हम ऊपर चढ़कर माळिया देखेंगे। तुम्हारा सारा भेद खुल जाएगा, यह जानकर नीचे उतरो — राजा अत्यंत क्रोध में हैं।'
