Translation

ઓખા પોતાની સખીને કહે છે: 'સખી, સ્વપ્નું ક્યારેય સાચું નથી હોતું, મારી સહિયર, સ્વપ્નું સાચું નથી હોતું. જો કોઈ ગરીબ માણસ સ્વપ્નામાં રાજ્ય પામે, અને સ્વપ્નની અંદર એ ભવ્ય અનુભવ ઝળહળે — એના દ્વારે રથ અને ઘોડા ઊભા હોય, ચારે બાજુ વૈભવ હોય — પણ જ્યારે એ જોવા જાય ત્યારે ત્યાં એક ગંધર્વ પણ ન મળે, બધું અદૃશ્ય થઈ જાય. એ જ રીતે, કોઈ નિર્ધન માણસ સ્વપ્નામાં ધન પામે, સ્વપ્નની અંદર એ સુખ ઝળહળે — દેશ-વિદેશ એનાં વહાણ ચાલતાં હોય, અઢળક વેપારીઓ એની સેવામાં હોય — પણ જ્યારે જાગીને જુએ ત્યારે ત્યાં કોઈ નથી, કશું નથી, ક્યાંથી લાવે એ સાર? કોઈ મૂર્ખ માણસ સ્વપ્નામાં વેદ-પુરાણ ભણી લે, જ્ઞાની બની જાય — પણ જ્યારે જાગીને ભણવા બેસે ત્યારે એને એક અક્ષર પણ ન આવડે, પથ્થર જેવો અભણ જ રહે. કોઈ વાંઝિયો સ્વપ્નામાં ઝડપથી પુત્ર પામે, ઘોડિયું ઓરડામાં ઝૂલે ને પારણું પરસાળમાં બંધાય — પણ જ્યારે જાગીને જુએ ત્યારે ક્યાંથી લાવે એ બાળ? સ્વપ્નું ક્યારેય સાચું નથી હોતું, મારી સહિયર, સ્વપ્નું સાચું નથી હોતું.' આ રીતે ઓખા પ્રેમાનંદ-રચિત આ ગીત દ્વારા પોતાના સ્વપ્નમાં આવેલા સુંદર પ્રિયતમ અનિરુદ્ધ વિશે મનમાં ઊઠતી આશા અને નિરાશા વચ્ચે ઝૂલતી, સ્વપ્નની અસ્થિરતા વ્યક્ત કરે છે.

Okha laments to her companion, saying: 'Dreams are never true, my dear friend, dreams are never true. Consider a poor man who, in the midst of a dream, attains a kingdom — within that dream his glory blazes bright, chariots and horses stand at his gate, and grandeur surrounds him on all sides — but when he goes to look upon it all, not a single gandharva, not a trace of that splendour remains. In the same way, a penniless man dreams of great wealth — in that dream his ships sail to distant lands and countless merchants serve at his command — but when he wakes and looks around, there is nothing, no one; where is all that abundance now? A foolish man dreams that he has mastered the Vedas and Puranas, that he has become learned and wise — but when he wakes and tries to read, he cannot manage even a single letter, as dull and unlettered as a stone. A childless man dreams that a son has swiftly come to him — a cradle swings in the inner room and a hammock hangs in the veranda — but when he wakes and looks, where is that child to be found? Dreams are never true, my dear friend, dreams are never true.' Thus Okha, through this song composed by Premanand, swings between hope and despair, giving voice to the fleeting, illusory nature of dreams as she recalls the beautiful beloved Aniruddha who came to her in the night.
