The mighty blast of the conch shattered the hearts of the enemy demons, and all understood that Krishna had arrived — where now was Banasura's vaunted prowess? The moment the conch sounded it was plain that Hari had come; the earth trembled at the sound, and Balarama and Satyaki roared their war-cries. Pradyumna called out in a great voice that Banasura's arms would truly be severed; none could fathom the ways of Govinda, and the Yadava army had closed in from every side. When the Yadava forces surrounded the entire kingdom, the minister rushed to Banasura and said, 'Rise, O king — a messenger brings word that an innumerable host has descended upon us.' Banasura signalled the minister with a glance of his eye to go and command the army at once; war-drums of every kind thundered, and the soldiers took up their weapons and marched to battle. The king himself made ready and stood at the head of his army; horses caparisoned in armour and jingling bells reared and leapt at the crack of the reins. Peacock feathers, tethers, and tassels swayed on the horses, which shied at their own shadows and pranced with the sound of their bells; camels, horses, and foot-soldiers all moved forward together. Black horses, dappled horses, spotted ones, blue-grey ones, and five-coloured ones — all neighing and rearing; some bore yellow trappings and were white as parrots, some were swift as the wind with curling manes — countless riders and chariot-drivers, tall and fearsome, grinding their teeth. The army was so vast it could not pass through the city gates; crying 'Kill the Yadavas!' wave upon wave of troops surged forward, and the earth shook under the thunder of their feet. Rage boiling within him, the warrior-king Banasura mounted for battle; when that mighty wrestler struck the ground, the very earth was overturned. When the great king Banasura roared from his mouth, all seven underworlds shook, and the sound reached as far as Brahmaloka; Bana hurled his challenge at Krishna. Krishna came swiftly on his Garuda-throne, and the frenzied Yadavas surged forward crying 'Strike! Strike!' Then Banasura spoke: 'You seduced an unmarried girl by deceit — Aniruddha committed a great wrong; the prince acted dishonourably, and now you come here on top of it all to fight!' Then the Lord smiled and replied, 'We have come as a wedding party; if Fate itself has forged this bond, let us complete this union properly.' Banasura shot back at once, 'What union, O cowherd! I shall give you such a wedding gift that I will send every one of you straight to the realm of Yama.' When Banasura spoke those mocking words, Krishna lifted his Saranga bow; in an instant the two armies clashed, and naked weapons flashed in every hand. Swords, battle-axes, and scimitars — some lifted the burden from their shoulders; iron clubs, lances, maces, and pestles — the war-cry of Balarama's forces rang out. Fifty-six crore Yadavas thundered forward and fell upon the demons; great numbers of the demon host were cut down, and Banasura, seeing the terrible slaughter, was filled with fury and dismay.

शंख की विशाल ध्वनि से शत्रु दैत्यों के हृदय विदीर्ण हो गए और सबको समझ आ गया कि कृष्ण आ पहुँचे हैं — अब बाणासुर का पराक्रम कहाँ गया? शंख का घोष सुनते ही स्पष्ट हो गया कि हरि आ गए हैं; उस नाद से धरती काँप उठी और बलराम तथा सात्यकि गर्जना करने लगे। प्रद्युम्न ने ऊँचे स्वर में कहा कि बाणासुर के हाथ सचमुच काट दिए जाएँगे; गोविंद की गति को कोई नहीं जान सकता, और यादव सेना चारों ओर से घेर चुकी थी। जब यादव सेना ने पूरे देश को घेर लिया तो मंत्री ने बाणासुर के पास आकर कहा, 'उठिए, नरेश — सेवक समाचार लाया है कि असंख्य सेना चढ़ आई है।' बाणासुर ने आँखों के इशारे से मंत्री को सेना को आज्ञा देने भेजा; तरह-तरह के नगाड़े गड़गड़ाए और सैनिक शस्त्र उठाकर युद्ध के लिए चल पड़े। राजा स्वयं तैयार होकर सेना के आगे खड़ा हुआ; घोड़े कवच, झुनझुनों की माला और साज-सज्जा से सजे हुए थे और टकोर सुनकर उछल पड़े। घोड़ों पर मोरपंख, रस्सियाँ और झालरें लटक रही थीं; वे अपनी ही परछाईं देखकर चौंक पड़ते और घुँघरुओं की आवाज़ पर नाचते; ऊँट, घोड़े और पैदल सैनिक सब साथ चले। काले, चितकबरे, धब्बेदार, नीलाभ और पाँच रंगों वाले घोड़े — सब हिनहिनाते और उछलते; पीले साज वाले, तोते जैसे श्वेत, वायुवेग से दौड़ने वाले, घुँघराले बालों वाले — अनगिनत सवार और रथ-चालक, लंबे-लंबे, भयानक, दाँत पीसते हुए। सेना इतनी विशाल थी कि नगर के फाटक में समाती न थी; 'यादवों को मारो' कहते हुए झुंड-के-झुंड उमड़ पड़े और पैरों की धमक से धरती थर्राने लगी। क्रोध भीतर उबलता हुआ, रण-राज बाणासुर चढ़ा; उस महाबली मल्ल के झटके से धरती उलट-पुलट हो गई। जब भूपाल बाणासुर ने मुँह से गर्जना की तो सातों पाताल हिल गए और वह नाद ब्रह्मलोक तक जा पहुँचा; बाण ने कृष्ण को ललकारा। कृष्ण गरुड़ पर सवार होकर तेज़ी से आए, उन्मत्त यादव उछल पड़े और 'मारो, मारो' की गर्जना गूँज उठी। तब बाणासुर बोला, 'कुँवारी कन्या को छल से वरा, अनिरुद्ध ने अन्याय किया; कुँवर ने बुरा काम किया और ऊपर से तू लड़ने चला आया!' तब भगवान मुस्कुराकर बोले, 'हम तो बारात लेकर आए हैं; यदि विधाता ने यह संबंध जोड़ा है तो इसे पूरा करें।' तब बाणासुर तत्काल बोला, 'कैसा संबंध, ओ ग्वाले! ऐसी पहनावनी दूँगा कि सबको यमपुरी पहुँचा दूँगा।' बाणासुर के व्यंग्य-वचन सुनते ही कृष्ण ने सारंग धनुष उठा लिया; पल भर में दोनों सेनाएँ टकरा गईं और हाथों में नंगे शस्त्र चमक उठे। खड्ग, फरसी और तलवारें — कोई सिर पर से बोझ उठाए; परिघ, तोमर, गदा और मूसल — बलराम की सेना का रण-नाद गूँजा। छप्पन करोड़ यादव गड़गड़ाते हुए दानवों पर टूट पड़े; दानव-दल का बड़ा भाग धराशायी हो गया और बाणासुर यह भारी तबाही देखकर क्रोध और चिंता से भर गया।
