Having received his boon, Banasura turned and made his way back toward Shonitpur. The wild animals and birds of the forest, seeing him approach, were seized with fear. As though they had heard nothing, they moved silently past him, yet all came to look — and every one of them beheld the mighty king Banasura. As he drew near the city, a minister appeared at the house of a king named Kaubhanda, who brought a princess from a distant land and had her wed to Banasura. After this, the powerful Banasura set out to conquer the world. He subdued the serpent kingdoms of the underworld, Patala, and marched onward, defeating the rulers of country after country — their number too great to recount. He ascended to the heavens and vanquished the gods themselves; all the devas fled before him. Even the sun god surrendered his own spear into Banasura's hands. Returning victorious after conquering the gods, Banasura encountered the sage Narada on his way. At that moment, the king bowed before Narada and touched his feet in reverence, then cried out: 'O Narada! O Narada! My purpose remains unfulfilled! Not a single warrior has been found who can satisfy the longing of my heart for a true battle.' Narada then spoke: 'Listen well, Banasura — the one against whom you must wage war, the one who alone can match you, is none other than Shiva Shankar himself, who granted you these thousand arms.'

वरदान पाकर बाणासुर शोणितपुर की ओर लौट चला। वन में रहने वाले पशु-पक्षी उसे देखकर भयभीत हो उठे। जैसे कुछ सुना ही न हो, वे चुपचाप उसके पास से निकलते जा रहे थे, फिर भी सभी आकर देखने लगे — और सबने बलशाली राजा बाणासुर को देखा। जब वह नगर के निकट पहुँचा, तो कौभांड नामक राजा के घर एक प्रधान प्रकट हुआ, जो किसी दूर देश की कन्या लेकर आया और उसका विवाह बाणासुर से करा दिया। इसके बाद बलवान बाणासुर देश जीतने के लिए निकल पड़ा। उसने पाताल में नागलोक को जीता, फिर आगे बढ़ा और देश-देश के राजाओं को परास्त किया — उनकी गिनती करना संभव नहीं। स्वर्ग में जाकर उसने देवताओं को भी जीत लिया; सभी देव भाग खड़े हुए। स्वयं सूर्य देव ने भी अपना अस्त्र — अपनी साँग — बाणासुर के हाथों में सौंप दी। देवताओं को जीतकर जब वह लौट रहा था, तभी रास्ते में नारद मुनि से भेंट हुई। उस क्षण राजा बाणासुर ने नारदजी को प्रणाम किया और उनके चरण स्पर्श किए, फिर बोला: 'हे नारदजी! हे नारदजी! मेरा काम अभी भी पूरा नहीं हुआ! एक भी ऐसा योद्धा नहीं मिला जो मेरे मन की अभिलाषा — सच्चे युद्ध की चाह — को पूरा कर सके।' तब नारद मुनि बोले: 'सुनो, बाणासुर राय! जिसने तुम्हें ये हजार भुजाएँ प्रदान की हैं, उन्हीं शिव शंकर के साथ तुम्हें युद्ध करना होगा — तभी तुम्हारी मनोकामना पूर्ण होगी।'
