Kaubhanda addresses Banasura: 'Listen, O King — let me tell you one plain truth. That mace-wielder slew ten lakh of our men; there is no righteousness in what he did. Yet I am struck with wonder at this strange turn of events — one man with a single mace has caused such catastrophic destruction. I warned you before, but arrogance blinded you. It was arrogance that brought Lanka to ruin and destroyed the ten-headed Ravana. The Moon grew arrogant and abandoned twenty-six of his wives, keeping only Rohini, and so he suffers the wasting disease to this day. There are countless such examples of pride leading to downfall, O King — I do not blame anyone else, but the truth is that your own fate has turned against you. Your father Bali grew arrogant after conquering the ten guardian-gods of all directions, and Vishnu, taking the form of the dwarf Vamana, pressed him down into the netherworld. No one's pride has ever endured — reflect on this in your heart. The first battle-standard has already fallen, blood has rained from the sky, stars have crashed to earth, and ill omens have begun to multiply. Now rouse yourself, marshal your army, and think not of retreat. You who conquered all ten directions — your very name has been challenged by a mere boy. The glory that rose with your name has now set in this very moment. Across heaven, earth, and the underworld your fame was proclaimed, yet this young man has reduced you to nothing.' Hearing these words, Banasura lost his composure entirely, and seeing the king's distressed state, the minister spoke again: 'Listen, O King — my own prowess is tremendous. As a lion is ever supreme over a hare, so shall I shatter this earth into a hundred pieces. Say the word and I will bring that boy bound in chains — what great effort does it take? All the warriors of Shonitpur will finish him on the spot.' Banasura was overjoyed at these words and adorned Kaubhanda with all manner of ornaments, saying, 'You are my greatest brother — all this treasury is yours. Go, brave one, go swiftly and accomplish this good deed; send me the glad tidings first, once that enemy has been dealt with.' Kaubhanda accepted the command with reverence, rose, took up his weapons, and marshalled the entire army in full splendour beyond all description. A colossal elephant, vast as a mountain, streamed with ichor, its howdah studded with diamonds, rubies, and gems whose brilliance dimmed the very sun. Horses of the solar and lunar lineages were caparisoned in glory, their faces adorned with pearls, their saddles inlaid with diamonds. Countless horses charged forward, too many to count; innumerable palanquins, chariots, and camels carried valiant warriors. Great elephants from Simhala island bore countless jewels upon them, and beneath vast cloud-dark canopies the minister himself rode in state. War-drums thundered, the shehnai rang out, and the entire army surged forward like a flooding ocean. Cannon-balls, shields, and spears flew thick and fast. Then Okha, standing there and watching, turned to Aniruddha with a gentle plea: 'My lord, if it pleases you, let Chitralekha go to Dwarka — she will accomplish everything that is needed.' At these words a flame of anger rose in Aniruddha; fire blazed from his very toes to the crown of his head, and he declared: 'If I do not stand and face this battle, my lineage will be shamed. I will slay Banasura just as Krishna slew Kamsa.' Even as the enemy soldiers began to hurl abuse, Aniruddha, burning with righteous fury and resolved to leap into the fray, rose with a warrior's roar — and Okha, lifting him up in that very moment, prostrated herself before him in reverent salutation.

कौभांड बाणासुर से कहता है: 'राजा, सुनो, मैं तुम्हें एक सच्ची बात बताता हूँ — उस गदाधारी ने अकेले दस लाख सैनिकों को मार डाला, यह कोई धर्म नहीं है। मुझे तो यह सुनकर बड़ा आश्चर्य होता है कि एक ही गदा से इतना भारी उत्पात मचा दिया। पहले मैंने तुम्हें सावधान किया था, पर अहंकार ने तुम्हें अंधा कर दिया। अहंकार के कारण ही लंका गई और दशानन रावण का नाश हुआ। चंद्रमा ने अहंकार किया, रोहिणी को छोड़कर छब्बीस पत्नियाँ त्याग दीं, इसीलिए वह क्षय रोग भोगता है। ऐसे अहंकार के अनेक उदाहरण हैं, हे भूपाल, सुनो। किसी पर दोष नहीं लगाता, पर सच यह है कि तुम्हारा भाग्य फूट गया है। तुम्हारे पिता बलि ने अहंकार किया, दसों दिशाओं के रक्षकों को जीत लिया, तब विठ्ठल ने वामन रूप धारण कर उन्हें पाताल में दबा दिया। किसी का गर्व नहीं टिका, राजा, मन में सोचो। पहली ध्वजा टूट कर गिर पड़ी, रक्त की वर्षा हुई, नक्षत्र टूट पड़े — ये सब अपशकुन हैं। अब उठो, सेना संभालो, भागने का विचार मत करो। दसों दिशाएँ जीतकर आए हो, और एक बालक ने तुम्हारा नाम चुनौती दे दी — जो कीर्ति उगी थी वह इसी क्षण अस्त हो गई। स्वर्ग, मृत्युलोक और पाताल तीनों में तुम्हारी धाक थी, पर उस लड़के ने तुम्हें तिनके की तरह उड़ा दिया।' यह सुनकर बाणासुर की सुध-बुध जाती रही; राजा की दशा देखकर प्रधान फिर बोला: 'राजा, सुनो — मेरा पराक्रम प्रचंड है। जैसे सिंह सदा खरगोश पर भारी पड़ता है, वैसे ही मैं इस पृथ्वी को सौ टुकड़ों में कर दूँगा। कहो तो उसे बाँधकर ले आऊँ — इसमें कितना काम है? शोणितपुर के सभी वीर योद्धा उसे वहीं ठिकाने लगा देंगे।' यह वचन सुनकर बाणासुर प्रसन्न हो गया, उसने कौभांड को सभी आभूषण और श्रृंगार दिए और बोला: 'तुम मेरे सबसे बड़े भाई हो, यह सारा खजाना तुम्हारा है। जाओ वीर, शीघ्र जाओ और यह शुभ कार्य करो; पहले शुभ समाचार भेजना।' कौभांड ने वचन सिर-माथे लिया, उठा, हथियार उठाए, और पूरी सेना को सज्जित किया — उसकी शोभा का कोई पार न था। पर्वत के समान विशाल, मद बहाता हाथी, हीरे-माणिक-रत्नजड़ित अंबारी, जिसकी चमक से सूर्य भी ढक जाए। सूर्यवंशी और सोमवंशी घोड़े, मुखों पर मोती और जीन पर हीरे जड़े। अनगिनत अश्व दौड़ पड़े, गिनती से परे; अनेक पालकियाँ, रथ और ऊँट, सभी पर वीर सवार। सिंहल द्वीप के विशाल हाथी, अपार माणिक जड़े, ऊपर मेघ जैसे घने छत्र — और उन पर स्वयं मंत्री सवार। नगाड़ों की धमक गूँजी, शहनाई का सुर उठा, सारी सेना आगे बढ़ी — मानो सागर में बाढ़ आ गई हो। नाल, गोले, कवच, भाले — मार पर मार चली। तब ओखा वहाँ खड़ी सोचने लगी और अनिरुद्ध से विनती की: 'स्वामी, यदि आपके मन में उचित लगे, तो चित्रलेखा द्वारिका चली जाए — वह सारा काम सिद्ध कर लाएगी।' यह सुनते ही अनिरुद्ध को क्रोध चढ़ आया, पैर की उँगलियों से लेकर मस्तक तक ज्वाला भड़क उठी, और वह बोला: 'यदि मैं युद्ध में सामने न रहूँ तो मेरा वंश लज्जित होगा। बाणासुर को उसी तरह मारूँगा जैसे कृष्ण ने कंस को मारा।' इतने में शत्रु-सैनिक गालियाँ देने लगे, और अनिरुद्ध, जो पहले से ही छलाँग लगाने को आतुर था, प्रचंड क्रोध के साथ उठ खड़ा हुआ — और ओखा ने उसी क्षण अनिरुद्ध को उठाकर उनके चरणों में साष्टांग दंडवत किया।
