Shukadeva narrates: the mothers-in-law — Banasura's mothers — arrived, and what a sight they were to behold. Their hair was a tangled thicket like a bamboo grove, their heads as massive as mountains, their eyes like dark, sunken wells, and their faces so hideous that the very sight of them could stop a man's heart. Their teeth were as large and crooked as the handle of a plough — one look at them and you felt your end had come. Around their waists hung clusters like date-palm bunches, in their ears dangled heavy rings like camel's dewlaps, their legs bore the fearsome bulk of bears, around their hips rattled a chain of buffalo bells, and coiled serpents wound around their arms — and these terrifying women came forward with blazing fire-pots balanced upon their heads. Their backs rose like mountain ridges, and wild boars roamed atop their skulls. Their mouths uttered dreadful words, and the sight of them struck terror in every heart. When these fearsome mothers-in-law arrived at the gates of Morara — Krishna's fortress — Okha recognized her mothers-in-law and received them with care. Weeping and pleading, they cried out: 'You have already crushed Banasura's father Bali down into the netherworld — that is punishment enough; know that this boy Bana is your own child.' 'O ocean of compassion, treasury of grace, forgive this fault; knowing us as helpless and wretched, show mercy — he is your humble servant.' Then Jagannatha, the four-armed Krishna, took back his Sudarshana Chakra with compassion, severed nine hundred and ninety-six of Banasura's arms, and left only four remaining. Banasura, streaming with blood and tears, came before Shiva, fell at his feet saying 'O Shiva,' and spoke: 'O lord of Kailasa, hear me — I have one prayer to make.' So saying, Bana bowed his head and began to speak. Hearing this, Shiva — the lord of Uma — was filled with fury; great anger rose within him, and he set out for battle with wrath in his heart — and the earth trembled without end. Listen, O prince: Sadashiva marched to war, and the boundless earth shook beneath his feet.

शुकदेव कथा सुनाते हैं: वेवाण — अर्थात् बाणासुर की माताएँ — आ पहुँचीं, और उनकी जो जात थी, वह देखने लायक थी। उनके सिर पर बाँस की झाड़ी जैसे उलझे हुए केश थे, मस्तक पर्वत के समान विशाल था, आँखें अँधेरे कुएँ जैसी गहरी और भयावह थीं, और मुख इतना कुरूप था कि देखते ही दिल दहल जाए। दाँत हल की मूठ जैसे बड़े और भयंकर थे — उन्हें देखकर ही जैसे प्राण निकल जाएँ। कमर पर खजूर के गुच्छों जैसे आभूषण, कानों में ऊँट की लटकन जैसी भारी बालियाँ, पैरों पर भालू जैसे विकराल उभार, कमर पर भैंसे की घुँघरुमाला, और हाथों पर टेढ़े साँप लिपटे हुए — ये भयंकर स्त्रियाँ जलती हुई अँगीठी सिर पर उठाए चली आ रही थीं। उनकी पीठ पहाड़ जैसी ऊँची थी और मस्तक पर जंगली सूअर घूमते थे। मुँह से भयानक वचन निकलते थे और उन्हें देखकर कलेजा काँप उठता था। जब ये भयावह वेवाण मोरार — अर्थात् कृष्ण — के किले के द्वार पर आईं, तो ओखा ने अपनी सासुओं को पहचानकर उनका भली-भाँति स्वागत किया। वे गिड़गिड़ाते हुए बोलीं: 'तुमने बाणासुर के पिता बलि को पाताल में दबा दिया — बहुत हो गया; यह बालक बाण तो तुम्हारा ही है, यह जानो।' 'हे करुणासागर, कृपानिधि, इस भूल को क्षमा करो; दीन जानकर दया करो — यह तो तुम्हारा ही दास है।' तब चतुर्भुज जगन्नाथ कृष्ण ने करुणा करके सुदर्शन चक्र वापस ले लिया और बाणासुर की नौ सौ छियानवे भुजाएँ काट दीं, केवल चार भुजाएँ शेष रहने दीं। तब बाण, रक्त और आँसू बहाता हुआ, शिव के पास आया और 'हे शिव' कहकर उनके चरण पकड़ लिए: 'हे कैलासपति, सुनिए — मेरी एक विनती है।' — ऐसा कहकर बाण ने सिर झुकाकर बोलना शुरू किया। यह सुनकर उमापति शिव क्रोध से भर गए, मन में भारी रोष उठा, और वे युद्ध के लिए चल पड़े — और धरती अपार काँपने लगी। हे राजकुमार, सुनो — सदाशिव युद्ध पर चढ़े, और धरती असीम रूप से थरथराने लगी।
