Banasura came charging on his chariot, his quiver full of arrows, rushing forward with tremendous speed, paying no heed to the brave warriors before him, sweeping over them like a great flood surging from the sea. The battlefield rang with the five great war-sounds and the blare of battle-drums, and he shattered the soldiers utterly; his arrows flew and spread across the sky until they blotted out the very sun. Aniruddha's thorn-army was crushed and scattered, cut down as a machete cuts through banana plants; every man who came forward fell upon the earth, and not one turned back alive. Then a mace struck Aniruddha on the head, the elephant screamed and fled in terror; a heavy club fell upon Banasura himself, and his chariot cracked and careened away. The king lost all his senses, his earring was torn away and his ear was cut; his minister lifted him and carried him homeward, and only when they reached home did Banasura regain his wits. Then the king spoke: 'Listen, my minister — soon that mace will come again; I know that my life is at its end.' The minister replied, 'Why do you speak as though you know nothing? Where is the power that Mahadeva granted you? Cast the Aaphani — the serpent-noose — and all will be well; it will bind his very breath and life.' So Banasura turned back and climbed up to the terrace above, and Aniruddha, thinking it over, said to himself, 'Now I shall fold my hands in surrender.' He held Shiva's vow to be true and bowed his head to that word, and the moment Aniruddha joined his palms together, Banasura released the serpent-noose. Aniruddha fell bound in its coils, a boulder came crashing down from above, and kicks and blows and beatings rained upon him; seeing this, Okha wept bitterly. Then Banasura resolved in his mind what he would do, and he took Aniruddha away with him — dragging the young prince away with blows — while Okha stood in her upper chamber and wept and wept.

बाणासुर तरकश में बाण भरकर रथ पर सवार होकर तेज़ गति से आया, और वीर योद्धाओं की परवाह किए बिना, जैसे समुद्र का प्रचंड ज्वार उमड़ आता है, वैसे ही टूट पड़ा। रणभूमि में पाँचों रणवाद्य और युद्ध-नगाड़े गूँज उठे, उसने सैनिकों को चकनाचूर कर दिया; उसके छूटे हुए बाण आकाश में इस तरह छा गए जैसे सूर्य ही ढक गया हो। अनिरुद्ध की काँटे जैसी सेना आपस में घुल-मिल कर नष्ट हो गई, जैसे कोई धारदार हथियार केले के पेड़ों को काट डाले; जितने आए वे सब धरती पर ढेर हो गए, उनमें से कोई भी वापस नहीं लौटा। तभी एक गदा आकर अनिरुद्ध के सिर पर लगी, हाथी चीख मारकर भाग गया; बाणासुर पर भी एक भारी गदा आ पड़ी और उसका रथ कड़कड़ाकर टूट गया। राजा की सुध-बुध जाती रही, कुंडल छिटक गया और कान कट गए; मंत्री उसे उठाकर घर की ओर चल पड़ा, और घर पहुँचने पर ही बाणासुर को होश आया। तब राजा बोला, 'सुनो, मेरे मंत्री, अभी वह गदा फिर आएगी; मुझे लग रहा है कि अब यह प्राण जाएँगे।' मंत्री ने कहा, 'क्यों अनजान बन रहे हो? महादेव का दिया हुआ बल कहाँ गया? आफणी — नागपाश — फेंको तो कल्याण होगा, उसी बंधन से उसके प्राण जकड़ जाएँगे।' तब बाणासुर वापस लौटा और ऊपर माळिये — छत की मंज़िल — पर चढ़ा; अनिरुद्ध ने मन में सोचा, 'अब मैं हाथ जोड़ लेता हूँ।' उसने शिव के वचन को सत्य मानकर उसे मस्तक पर धारण किया, और जैसे ही अनिरुद्ध ने दोनों हाथ जोड़े, बाणासुर ने नागपाश छोड़ दिया। अनिरुद्ध उस बंधन में जकड़कर गिर पड़ा, ऊपर से पर्वत-खंड गड़गड़ाकर आया, और लातें, घूँसे, थप्पड़ बरसने लगे; यह दृश्य देखकर ओखा फूट-फूटकर रोने लगी। तब बाणासुर ने मन में निश्चय किया और अनिरुद्ध को उठाकर ले चला — कुँवर को मारते-पीटते ले जाता है — और ओखा माळिये में खड़ी होकर रोती ही रह गई।
