Okha gives voice to her anguish: she entered the water and grasped gourds to keep herself afloat, but when she reached the middle of the ocean the gourds burst and sank; when thirst seized her and she went to a lake and dipped her feet to drink, the full lake dried up before her eyes; she moved away from one shore but could not reach the other, and by the cruel arrangement of fate she remained stranded in the middle of the waters. She went to worship God and received only a curse in return; widowhood came to her even before marriage — what sins of past lives had brought her to this? Okha pleads with Amba Parvati: 'You are my mother; a mother does not abandon her child. I am your daughter — how can you forsake me?' She circumambulates the goddess with love and stands before her with folded hands, and Parvati says, 'Ask for a boon; I will grant it at once.' Okha replies joyfully, 'Mother, give me a husband after my own heart.' She asks three times over, again and again, 'Grant me a husband in this direction,' and when she speaks shamelessly and without restraint, Parvati's anger rises. Parvati declares, 'You have acted with shameless desire, and so I give you this curse — you shall be married three times.' On the third and the thirteenth of the lunar fortnight you shall have three husbands — hearing this curse, the princess trembled. Okha protests, 'Mother, a man may have many wives, but for a woman to have another man — even the hearing of it is unbearable.' Parvati then consoles her: 'The beautiful month of Madhav will come, and on the day of Dwadashi your life's beloved will come to you in a dream and marry you; after you wake, recognise him — I speak the truth — you will be married three times, but the husband will be one and the same.' Overjoyed at receiving this promise of a husband, Okha returns to her palace and tells her companions, 'O friends, I have come back married to a handsome husband!' And so day after day passed for Okha, until at last the beautiful month of Madhav arrived and the day of Dwadashi came. Okha spread a lovely bed, adorned her chamber with decorations, and held in her heart the hope that today her life's beloved would come to her in a dream. Evening fell, the sun set, night deepened, and still he did not come — Okha pined and waited. The dark night wore on and no one came, and fear crept into her heart that Parvati's promise might perhaps prove false. The wind blew, the window rattled loudly, and Okha sprang up crying, 'Oh, he has come, he has come!' She called out, 'I know you have come — you are the brother of my own sister-in-law — but I will not open the door until you speak; I have patience in my heart.' She took up her veena and began to sing sweet songs, but found no peace, and the echoes and imaginings only grew stronger. Then one door began to rattle, and Okha ran to it and flung it open — but what met her eyes was only the shadow of one of the pillars of Banasura's palace. She spoke to the shadow: 'Oh, so you have come — I would give my life for you! I am a woman of virtue and will not call you in until you speak. If Banasura comes to know, he will take both our lives — why do you stand there, O son of my mother-in-law's house?' Okha's cries and commotion in the palace rose to the heavens, and Shiva and Parvati heard the sound from the sky. Shiva asked, 'Umiya, which woman is weeping?' Parvati replied, 'Mahadev, it is surely Okha who weeps.' Parvati said, 'Our word must not prove false, and so that Okha does not wake and rise before the appointed time, I have sent the power of tamas — the treasury of deep sleep — down to her.' The middle of the night passed, Okha's eyes closed in sleep, and in her dream Pradyumna's son — Aniruddha — came to her and married her.

ओखा अपनी पीड़ा व्यक्त करती हुई कहती है कि हम पानी में उतरे और तैरने के लिए तुंबे पकड़े, पर समुद्र के बीच में पहुँचते ही तुंबे फूट गए; प्यास लगी तो सरोवर के किनारे गई, पाँव डुबोए ही थे कि भरा-पूरा सरोवर सूख गया; इस किनारे से हट गई, उस किनारे न पहुँच सकी, और कर्म के संयोग से जल के बीच में ही रह गई। ईश्वर की पूजा करने गई तो उल्टा शाप मिला, विवाह से पहले ही वैधव्य आ गया — यह किस जन्म के पाप हैं? ओखा उमिया से गुहार लगाती है: 'तू तो मेरी माँ है, बच्चे को छोड़ नहीं देते; मैं तुम्हारी पुत्री हूँ, तुम मुझे कैसे छोड़ सकती हो?' प्रेम से परिक्रमा करके हाथ जोड़कर खड़ी हुई, तब पार्वती ने कहा, 'माँग, मैं तुरंत वर दूँगी।' ओखा हर्षित होकर बोली, 'माँ, मुझे मनपसंद पति दो।' तीन बार बार-बार यही माँग की — 'इस दिशा में वर दो' — और जब ओखा लाज छोड़कर बोली तो पार्वती को क्रोध आ गया। पार्वती बोलीं, 'तूने निर्लज होकर काम किया है, इसलिए मैं तुझे शाप देती हूँ — तू तीन बार ब्याही जाएगी।' तीज और तेरस को तेरे तीन पति होंगे — यह शाप सुनकर राजकुमारी काँप उठी। ओखा बोली, 'माँ, पुरुष के कई स्त्रियाँ हो सकती हैं, पर स्त्री का दूसरा पुरुष — यह सुनना भी असह्य है।' तब पार्वती ने समझाया: 'सुंदर माधव मास आएगा, द्वादशी के दिन तुम्हारे प्राण-प्रिय स्वप्न में आकर तुमसे विवाह करेंगे; जागने के बाद पहचान लेना — मैं सत्य कह रही हूँ — तीन बार विवाह होगा, पर पति एक ही रहेगा।' वर का वचन पाकर प्रसन्न ओखाबाई महल की ओर चल दीं और सखियों से बोलीं, 'अरी बाई, मैं सुंदर पति से ब्याह कर आई!' इस प्रकार ओखाबाई के दिन पर दिन बीतते गए और अंततः सुंदर माधव मास आया, द्वादशी का दिन आया। ओखा ने सुंदर सेज बिछाई, कक्ष को सजाया, और मन में यह भाव रखा कि आज स्वप्न में उनके प्राण-प्रिय आएँगे। संध्या हुई, सूर्य अस्त हुआ, रात गहरी हुई, फिर भी वे न आए — ओखा तड़पती रही। घोर रात बीत गई, कोई न आया, ओखा के मन में डर समाया कि कहीं उमिया का वचन झूठा तो नहीं होगा? हवा चली, खिड़की खड़खड़ाई, ओखा 'ओ आ गए, ओ आ गए' कहकर तुरंत उठ बैठी। वह बोली, 'तुम आए हो, मैं जानती हूँ — मेरी सगी ननद के भाई हो — पर बोले बिना नहीं खोलूँगी, हृदय में धैर्य है।' ओखा ने वीणा हाथ में ली और मधुर गीत गाने लगी, पर चैन न मिला और भ्रम बढ़ते रहे। तभी एक द्वार खड़खड़ाने लगा, ओखाबाई दौड़ीं और दरवाज़ा खोला — पर वहाँ बाणासुर के महल का एक स्तंभ था, उसकी छाया ओखा की नज़र में पड़ी। ओखा बोली, 'ओ, वे आए हैं, उन पर न्योछावर जाऊँ! गुणवती नारी हूँ, बोले बिना नहीं बुलाऊँगी। बाणासुर जान जाएगा तो दोनों के प्राण ले लेगा — सास के लाल, क्यों खड़े हो?' ओखाबाई महल में शोर मचाती रहीं, ईश्वर और पार्वती ने यह रुदन आकाश से सुना। शिव बोले, 'उमियाजी, कौन-सी नारी रो रही है?' उमिया बोलीं, 'महादेव, निश्चित रूप से ओखा रो रही है।' उमिया बोलीं, 'हमारा वचन झूठा न हो, और ओखा समय से पहले जाग न जाए, इसलिए तामसी विद्या — निद्रा का भंडार — भेज दिया।' मध्यरात्रि बीत गई, ओखा की आँखें मुँद गईं, और स्वप्न में प्रद्युम्न के पुत्र — अनिरुद्ध — आए और ओखा से विवाह किया।
