Shonitpur was a grand and prosperous city, the proud home and kingdom of Banasura, and there his beloved daughter Okha grew up, a girl of fine nature and noble ways. One moment she would fetch her game pieces and set out the board, the next she would spread a mat and lose herself in all manner of play, and then in an instant she would climb onto the swing-cot and sway with delight. She would play with her dolls and little garments in cheerful rivalry with her companions, and for her beloved swing she would tie cords of soft silk. The anklet-bells rang out with a deep, resonant jingle, and the small bells chimed with a full and joyful sound, while Okha sang songs of every kind, her sweet voice filling the air with melody. Thus she played and ate and made merry, singing auspicious songs with a heart full of love and gladness, and all the while, within the temple-terrace of the palace, Okha was quietly blossoming into a young woman in the full bloom of youth.

शोणितपुर एक भव्य और समृद्ध नगर था, जो बाणासुर का गौरवशाली राजधाम था — और वहीं उसकी प्रिय पुत्री ओखा उत्तम स्वभाव और सुंदर आचरण के साथ पल-बढ़ रही थी। एक पल में वह सोगटे उठा लाती, एक पल में पाट बिछा देती, एक पल में तरह-तरह के खेलों में डूब जाती, और एक पल में हिंडोले की खाट पर झूलने बैठ जाती। वह अपनी सखियों के साथ गुड़िया और उनके वस्त्रों से होड़ लगाकर खेलती, और हिंडोले पर झूलने के लिए रेशम की कोमल डोर बाँधती। घुँघरू धमधम बजते, छोटी घुँघरियाँ घोर-घोर झनझनातीं, और ओखा तरह-तरह के गीत गाते हुए मधुर स्वर में गूँज उठती। इस तरह खेलते, खाते, आनंद मनाते और प्रेमपूर्वक मंगल गीत गाते-गाते ओखा धीरे-धीरे यौवन को प्राप्त होती जा रही थी, और महल के मंदिर-माळिये में उसका यह उल्लासभरा, निश्चिंत बचपन खिलता और महकता रहा।
