A great battle broke out between Shiva and Krishna. Ganesha rode out on his mouse, muttering to himself; Kartikeya, Shankara's son, rode his peacock; Virabhadra mounted a lion; and Shiva himself rode his bull, leading a vast army whose glory is beyond telling. Witches, ghouls, ghosts, spirits, demons, and wandering phantoms all marched along, keeping a cautious distance. Krishna called to Kritavarma and said, 'Go reason with Mahadeva — why does he come to fight on behalf of a demon?' But Shiva came forward with fire in his heart and began hurling insults: 'You dark-skinned brother-in-law of Arjuna, you who fled with your bundles in the dead of night from Mathura — have you forgotten? You drank the milk of my aunt Putana, grazed cows in Gokula, grew up among cowherds and herdsmen — none of this is unknown to me.' Then Krishna, the bearer of the Saranga bow, blazed with anger and replied: 'You wander through cremation grounds and smear ash on your body, you chew hemp and datura — these are your shameless ways. You keep the company of witches and ghosts, you have no horse in your house and load your burden on a bull, while your wife weeps at home.' Then Tripurari Shiva flared with rage and retorted: 'You who drank buttermilk among girls, who wore a bodice and gave up your manhood — the whole world says Kanuda put on a woman's garment. You dallied with other men's wives and earned the name of a libertine.' Then Morari Krishna blazed with anger and said: 'If I am called a libertine, the whole world has seen me — but you who were counted a holy man, why did you become infatuated with a Bhil woman?' Hearing those words, Shiva erupted in fury and hurled his trident — let happen what will happen. Krishna released his Sudarshana discus and rushed forward with lightning speed, and the two clashed in a battle whose force cannot be described. Ganapati fought Pradyumna, Vasuman fought Batuk Bhairava, Virabhadra clashed with Balarama, and Shiva himself fought Shyamaliya Krishna — a sight worth beholding. Kala Bhairava, Kapal Bhairava, Tatksana Bhairava, Samhara Bhairava, Krodha Bhairava, and Dabha Bhairava all joined the fray. Ugrasena and Virasena, two mighty warriors, each led their own contingents into battle. Ghosts, spirits, demons, witches, and ghouls surged forward to drink blood, and the churel with her feet turned backward sucked the blood of all. Krishna's soldiers drove their spears deep into flesh, swords sliced off noses in an instant, half-dead men fell from open-handed blows, knives and clubs thundered. Many of the Yadava soldiers were felled by the enemy's strikes, some were crushed in the field, others trembled uncontrollably. Clubs, tridents, axes, and hand-cannons flew with a hiss, cannonballs crashed and thundered, and a great clamor filled the air. Walls of bone, skin, and flesh piled up on both sides, and a river of blood flowed through Shonitpur as if merging with the sea. Then from Shiva's side a terrible weapon of disease was unleashed — jaundice, fistula, piles, fistula-in-ano, and raging fever descended like a storm. Seeing this torrent of disease, the Yadava army fled and could not stand its ground. Krishna blazed with anger and moved to behead the hordes of fever. Then Fever spoke: 'Lord, give us a place to dwell — you yourself created us, why do you now destroy us?' The Lord replied: 'Take the lives of sinful mortals in the world of death — but do not go where the story of Okhaharan is heard in the month of Chaitra.' Fever said: 'Where someone hears it once, we will not go for that year; where someone hears it twice, we will flee at the very sight of them; where someone hears it three times, we will never afflict them in their lifetime — hear us, O Lord.' Swearing never to name those who hear Okhaharan, the fever-hordes departed for Kailasa. Then Shukadeva said to Parikshit: 'Listen, O king — the quivers were strung again, and Isha and Jagadisha clashed once more, neither yielding. Shiva hurled the Vajrastra, Krishna countered with the Mohastra; Shiva launched the Nagastra, Krishna answered with the Garudastra; Shiva unleashed the Parvatastra — its force is beyond telling. In fury, Krishna drew the Sudarshana, and Shiva stood firm with his trident. Trident and discus collided with a tremendous crash, fire rained down, the universe shook, the great serpent Shesha began to slip, and the earth could not bear the weight. Then Brahmani said to Brahma: 'My lord, Shiva and Shyamaliya are locked in battle, and Narada has stirred up this chaos — go and settle the quarrel, and good will come of it.' And so Brahma, reflecting wisely, mounted his swan and flew to the battlefield.

शिव और कृष्ण के बीच भीषण युद्ध छिड़ गया। गणेश बड़बड़ाते हुए अपने चूहे पर सवार होकर चले, शंकर के पुत्र कार्तिकेय मोर पर सवार हुए, वीरभद्र सिंह पर चढ़े, और शिव स्वयं वृषभ पर आरूढ़ होकर विशाल सेना के साथ आगे बढ़े — उस सेना का महिमा वर्णन करना कठिन है। डाकिनी, शाकिनी, भूत, प्रेत, पिशाच और वंतर — सभी थरथराते हुए दूरी बनाए चले। तब कृष्ण ने कृतवर्मा से कहा, 'महादेव को समझाओ — असुर का पक्ष लेकर लड़ने क्यों आए हो?' किंतु शिव मन में क्रोध की ज्वाला लिए सामने आए और गालियाँ देने लगे: 'अरे काले, अर्जुन के साले! बोरिया-बिस्तर उठाकर भागे, आधी रात को मथुरा छोड़कर भागे — यह भूल गए? मेरी मौसी पूतना का दूध पिया, गोकुल में गाएँ चराईं, ग्वालों-भरवाड़ों के बीच पले — यह सब मुझसे छिपा नहीं है।' तब सारंगपाणी कृष्ण को क्रोध आया और वे बोले: 'तू श्मशान-मसान में भटकता है, अंग पर राख मलता है, भाँग-धतूरा चबाता है — ये तेरे बेशर्म ढंग हैं। डाकिनी-भूत-प्रेत जैसी नीच संगत रखता है, घर में घोड़ा नहीं और बैल पर बोझ लादता है, घर में पत्नी रोती रहती है।' तब त्रिपुरारी शिव को क्रोध आया और वे बोले: 'अरे, लड़कियों के बीच छाछ पीता फिरा, काँचली पहनी — मर्दानगी खो दी! जगत में कहा गया कि कानुड़े ने काँचली पहनी। पराई स्त्रियों के साथ क्रीड़ा की, व्यभिचारी कहलाया।' तब मोरारी कृष्ण को क्रोध आया और वे बोले: 'भगवान होकर मैं व्यभिचारी — ठीक है, सारे जगत ने मुझे देखा है; पर तू जो साधु गिना जाता था, तब भीलनी पर क्यों मोहित हुआ?' यह वचन सुनकर शिव भारी क्रोध में आए और त्रिशूल उठाकर दे मारा — जो होना हो सो हो। कृष्ण ने सुदर्शन चक्र छोड़ा और तेज़ गति से झपटे, दोनों के बीच भीषण युद्ध छिड़ गया जिसका बल वर्णन से परे है। गणपति और प्रद्युम्न, वसुमान और बटुक भैरव, वीरभद्र और बलराम — सभी भिड़ गए। शिव और श्यामलिया स्वयं भिड़े — वह दृश्य देखने योग्य था। काल भैरव, कपाल भैरव, तत्क्षण भैरव, संहार भैरव, क्रोध भैरव और दाभ भैरव — सभी उग्र भैरव गण उमड़ पड़े। उग्रसेन और वीरसेन — दो बलशाली योद्धा — अपने-अपने सैनिकों को लेकर रण में उतरे। भूत, प्रेत, पिशाच, डाकिनी — सभी रक्त पीने उमड़े, उलटे पाँवों वाली चुड़ैल सबका रक्त चूसने लगी। कृष्ण-सेना के भाले भचाभच घुसे, तलवारों की धार से नाक कट गए, थप्पड़ों से अधमरे हो गए, चाकू और भोंगल गरजे। यादव-सेना के प्रहारों से अनेक ढेर हो गए, कोई रण में रौंदे गए, कोई थरथर काँपे। परिघ, त्रिशूल, फरसी, हस्त-नल — सब सनसनाते हुए छूटे, गोले गड़गड़ाए, खड़खड़ाहट गूँजी। हड्डी, चमड़ी और माँस की दो दीवारें खड़ी हो गईं, और शोणितपुर में रक्त की नदी बह चली जो सागर से मिलती लगी। तब शिव-पक्ष से भयंकर रोग-अस्त्र छूटा — पांडु, भगंदर, बवासीर, नाड़ी-व्रण और सन्निपात जैसे भीषण रोग-दल उमड़ पड़े। रोगों की यह वर्षा देखकर यादव-सेना भाग खड़ी हुई, कोई टिक न सका। तब हरि कृष्ण को क्रोध चढ़ा और वे ज्वर-दल को घेरकर उनके शीश छेदने उठे। तब ज्वर बोला: 'भगवान, हमें रहने का स्थान दो — आपने ही हमें उत्पन्न किया, अब क्यों मारते हो?' भगवान बोले: 'पापी मनुष्यों के प्राण लो — किंतु जहाँ चैत्र मास में ओखाहरण की कथा सुनी जाए, वहाँ मत जाना।' ज्वर बोला: 'जो एक बार सुने, उस वर्ष हम वहाँ न जाएँ; जो दो बार सुने, उसे देखते ही भाग जाएँ; जो तीन बार सुने, उसे जन्म भर न सताएँ — सुनो भगवान।' ओखाहरण सुनने वाले का नाम न लेने का वचन देकर ज्वर-दल कैलाश की ओर चला गया। तब शुकदेव ने परीक्षित से कहा: 'सुनो राजन — फिर तरकश कसे गए, ईश और जगदीश फिर भिड़े, कोई न हारा। शिव ने वज्रास्त्र छोड़ा, कृष्ण ने मोहास्त्र; शिव ने नागास्त्र, कृष्ण ने गरुड़ास्त्र; शिव ने पर्वतास्त्र — उसका बल वर्णन से परे है। क्रोध में भरकर कृष्ण ने सुदर्शन उठाया, शिव त्रिशूल लेकर डटे रहे। त्रिशूल और सुदर्शन टकराए, भारी झड़ उठी, अग्नि-वर्षा हुई, ब्रह्मांड काँपा, शेषनाग खिसकने लगे, धरती भार न सह सकी। तब ब्रह्माणी ने ब्रह्माजी से कहा: 'नाथ, शिव और श्यामलिया भिड़े हैं, नारद ने उत्पात मचाया है — जाकर झगड़ा सुलझाइए, उसी में कल्याण है।' तब ब्रह्माजी ज्ञान-विचार कर हंस पर सवार होकर वहाँ आए।'
