Parvati (Umiya) spoke: 'Listen, O King Banasura — if it pleases your heart, I shall grant you a daughter.' Banasura replied: 'Mother, a daughter is worth a crore sons to me; take away the shame of my childlessness and grant me this boon — let me find a worthy king from some fine land as a son-in-law, one who will carry my name forward, for that alone is the wish of my heart.' Blessed with this boon, Banasura returned joyfully to Shonitpur, and there his wife Banamati conceived — and now I shall tell of the glory of that conception. When the time that had begun in the month of Posh was fulfilled, a daughter was born at an auspicious hour; messengers of good tidings spread the news in all directions and the royal court was filled with celebration. Learned astrologers were summoned at once and the girl's birth-chart was drawn up; the guru, by the power of his knowledge, spoke his prophecy at that very moment: 'This daughter has first emerged from the very body of Umiya herself, and reading her sign and name, she should be called Okha. The planets, the hour, and the birth-ascendant are all auspicious — this child is excellent — and therefore the burden upon your hands will be lifted swiftly.' At that same instant a divine voice rang out from the sky: 'Hear this clearly, O king — this daughter will, by her own desire, choose a handsome young prince as her husband, and when she weds, a great cry of anguish will arise on all sides; the burden on your hands will indeed be lifted, but in that hour you will stand alone.' Troubled by these words, Banasura summoned his ministers and anxiously asked: 'The words of the gods never prove false — what remedy can we find?' The counsel given was this: 'Build a beautiful, lofty upper chamber, and place both Okha and Chitralekha within that palace tower, keeping them apart from the world outside.'

पार्वती (उमिया) बोलीं: 'हे बाणासुर राजा, सुन — यदि तेरे मन को भाए तो मैं तुझे एक कन्या दे सकती हूँ।' तब बाणासुर ने कहा: 'हे माता, पुत्री मुझे करोड़ पुत्रों के समान है; मेरे वंध्यत्व का कलंक मिटाओ और यह वरदान दो कि किसी अच्छे देश का राजा मेरा दामाद बने जो मेरा नाम रोशन करे — यही मेरे मन की कामना है।' वरदान पाकर बाणासुर प्रसन्न मन से शोणितपुर लौट गया, और वहाँ उसकी पत्नी बाणामती को गर्भ रहा — उस गर्भ का महिमा अब मैं कहता हूँ। पोष मास से चला समय जब पूर्ण हुआ, तो एक शुभ घड़ी में कन्या का जन्म हुआ; बधाइयाँ चारों दिशाओं में फैल गईं और राजसभा में आनंद छा गया। तुरंत ज्ञानी ज्योतिषियों को बुलाया गया और कन्या की जन्मपत्रिका बनाई गई; गुरुजी ने अपनी विद्या के बल पर उसी क्षण भविष्यवाणी की: 'यह कन्या सबसे पहले उमियाजी के अंग से प्रकट हुई है, और राशि तथा नाम देखकर इसका नाम ओखा रखना उचित है। ग्रह, समय और लग्न सभी शुभ हैं, यह संतान उत्तम है, और इसीलिए तेरे हाथ का भार शीघ्र उतर जाएगा।' उसी पल आकाशवाणी हुई: 'हे राजा, ध्यान से सुन — यह पुत्री अपनी इच्छा से किसी रूपवान कुमार को वरेगी, और जब यह विवाह होगा तब चारों ओर हाहाकार मचेगा; तेरे हाथ का भार उतरेगा, किंतु उस घड़ी तू अकेला ही होगा।' यह सुनकर बाणासुर ने अपने मंत्रियों को बुलाया और चिंतित होकर पूछा: 'देव-वचन कभी मिथ्या नहीं होते, तो अब क्या उपाय किया जाए?' तब सबने यह उपाय सुझाया: 'एक सुंदर ऊँचा महल-कक्ष बनवाओ और ओखा तथा चित्रलेखा दोनों को उस मंदिर-माळिये में रखो — ताकि वे बाहरी संसार से दूर रहें।'
