Banasura came to Madhuvan to perform penance; he bathed in pure water and fixed his mind in meditation upon Shiva. Seated in firm posture with a rosary in his right hand, he continued his worship of Lord Shiva even as Sugriva whispered into his ears. His blood and flesh dried away and his body became like a piece of dry wood, yet that mighty one did not waver, and the three worlds trembled with the force of his austerity. Then Shankara spoke to Umiya, saying, 'Listen — a great demon is performing intense penance and worshipping me with deep meditation; whatever his lineage may be, he has taken up a mighty japa — if you permit, I shall grant him a boon and establish him as my son.' Umiya replied, 'O Shulpani, hear me — if one nurtures a serpent with milk, it will still sting the very finger that fed it. Bhashmangad turned his back after receiving a boon, and when you granted a boon to Ravana, he tormented Janaki's lord Rama. Therefore, O Bholanath, do as you please, but think well before you act.' Shiva answered, 'Umiya, the devotee who offers water in my service I shall purify in body; one who offers fragrance I shall bless with a glorious intellect; one who offers bilva leaves I shall shelter under a golden canopy; one who rings the bell in devotion I shall make prosperous. Acting on a woman's wisdom, I shall not delay in giving — I am known as Bholanath, the innocent one; how can I now become a lord of deceit?' So saying, Bholanath departed, and Banasura bowed his head. Shiva said, 'Banasura, awaken — I grant you a boon.' Banasura replied, 'Maharaj, I am awake; grant me the kingdom of Shonitpur, and I ask again and again — give me a thousand arms, and let each arm bear the strength of ten thousand elephants.' Shiva said 'Astu' — so be it — granted the boon, and established Banasura as his own son.

बाणासुर तप करने के लिए मधुवन आया, निर्मल जल से स्नान करके शिवजी का ध्यान धारण किया। आसन लगाकर बैठ गया, दाहिने हाथ में जपमाला थामी; सुग्रीव ने कान में माला डाली फिर भी वह शिव भगवान की आराधना करता रहा। उसके शरीर का रक्त और मांस सूख गया, देह सूखी लकड़ी जैसी हो गई; फिर भी वह महाबली चुप न रहा और उसके तप से तीनों लोक काँप उठे। तब शंकर ने उमिया से कहा, 'सुनो — एक असुर महातप साध कर मेरा ध्यान धरके आराधना कर रहा है; उसके पिता कोई भी हों, उसने महाजाप आरंभ किया है — यदि तुम कहो तो वरदान दूँ, पुत्र मानकर स्थापित करूँ।' उमिया बोलीं, 'शूलपाणि, मेरी बात सुनो — साँप को दूध पिलाकर पालो तो वह उसी उँगली पर डसता है जिसने पाला। भस्माँगद वरदान पाकर पीठ फेर गया, रावण को वरदान दिया तो उसने जानकीनाथ राम को कष्ट दिया। इसलिए भोले, जो उचित लगे करो, पर सोच-समझकर करो।' शिव बोले, 'उमिया, जो भक्त सेवा करके जल चढ़ाए उसकी काया निर्मल करूँ, सुगंध चढ़ाए तो बुद्धि धन्य-धन्य करूँ, बिल्वपत्र चढ़ाए तो सोने का छत्र धराऊँ, घंटा बजाए तो उसे निहाल कर दूँ। स्त्री की बुद्धि के अनुसार चलकर देने में देर न करूँ — मैं भोलानाथ कहलाता हूँ, अब कपटीनाथ कैसे बनूँ?' यह कहकर भोलानाथ चले गए और बाणासुर ने शीश झुकाया। शिव ने कहा, 'बाणासुर, जागो — तुम्हें वरदान देता हूँ।' बाणासुर बोला, 'महाराज, मैं जाग रहा हूँ; मुझे शोणितपुर का राज दीजिए, और बार-बार माँगता हूँ — मुझे हजार भुजाएँ दीजिए, और प्रत्येक भुजा में दस हजार हाथियों का बल दीजिए।' शिव ने 'अस्तु' कहकर वर दिया और बाणासुर को पुत्र मानकर स्थापित किया।
