Okha and Chitralekha lived together in the upper chamber of the palace tower. Just as it is foolish for a farmer to plough his fields in the month of Bhadrava, or to seek counsel from an enemy, or for parents whose beloved daughter is at home to go begging — so too are certain things utterly futile. Fire can burn an entire forest to ash, a mountain can be hollowed out by cunning and deceit, and when a helpless woman resolves something in her anger, even the gods cannot fathom what she may do. A serpent, a woman, a sage, a river, a king, and Lakshmi — never seek to test the limits of these six, if one wishes to remain safe and well. Banasura had a magnificent palace built a full yojana away from the city, whose balconies, windows, and terraces were beyond all description. It was inlaid with emeralds and pearls, with turquoise-studded platforms within, stables for horses and elephants, and beautiful swinging cradle-beds for leisure. Days passed, months passed, years passed, and Okha grew into a young woman; playing and spending her days with Chitralekha, her body could barely contain the joy and energy of her youth. The king had posted a hundred and twenty-five thousand soldiers to guard her, and it was in the midst of all this watchfulness that Okha came of age. The guards were commanded — stay awake at night, stay awake by day, do not close your eyes even for a moment; make sure that not even a breath of wind enters the tower where Okha dwells.

ओखा और चित्रलेखा महल के ऊपरी कक्ष में रहती थीं। जो किसान भादों के महीने में खेत जोते और शत्रु से सलाह माँगे, या जिसके घर में लाडली बेटी हो और उसके माता-पिता भीख माँगते फिरें — ये सब व्यर्थ के काम हैं। अग्नि पूरे वन को जलाकर राख कर देती है, छल-कपट से पर्वत भी खोखला हो जाता है, और यदि कोई अबला स्त्री रूठकर कुछ ठान ले, तो देवता भी उसे नहीं समझ सकते। सर्प, स्त्री, ऋषि, नदी, राजा और लक्ष्मी — इन छहों की सीमा कभी मत परखो, यदि कुशल रहना चाहते हो। बाणासुर ने नगर से एक योजन दूर एक भव्य महल बनवाया, जिसके झरोखों, खिड़कियों और अटारियों का वर्णन करते नहीं बनता। वह महल पन्ने और मोतियों से जड़ा हुआ था, भीतर फ़िरोज़े के चबूतरे थे, घोड़ों और हाथियों के लिए अलग-अलग अस्तबल थे, और झूलने के लिए सुंदर हिंडोले बने हुए थे। इस तरह दिन, महीने और वर्ष बीतते गए, और ओखा धीरे-धीरे बड़ी होती गई; चित्रलेखा के साथ खेलते-खेलते उसके अंग-अंग में उमंग और उल्लास समाता न था। राजा ने सवा लाख सैनिक ओखा की रखवाली के लिए वहाँ तैनात किए थे, और इन्हीं सबके बीच ओखाबाई यौवन को प्राप्त हो गई। पहरेदारों को आदेश था — रात को जागो, दिन को जागो, एक पल के लिए भी आँख मत मूँदो; ओखा के महल में हवा का एक झोंका भी प्रवेश न कर पाए, इसका पूरा ध्यान रखो।
