Okha and Chitralekha debate whether to wake Aniruddha from deep sleep, with Okha arguing against the sin of disturbing him. The canto includes a series of moral warnings about the ill fate awaiting wives who eat before their husbands, sleep ahead of them, disobey them, or quarrel with them, describing their rebirths as bats, blind servants, cats, and rabid dogs. Okha finally challenges Chitralekha with the analogy of a snake approaching a sleeping beloved in a cradle, pressing the urgency of action.

  1. 1 ઊંઘ્યા પિયુને જગાડીએ, ભરનિદ્રામાંથી ઉઠાડીએ; મન એવાં બીજીએ, બ્રહ્મહત્યા તે શીદ લીજીએ.
  2. 2 ભરથાર પહેલાં ભામિની, જે અન્ન રાંધીને ખાય; વાગોળ થઈને અવતરે, ઊંધે મસ્તક ટંગાય.
  3. 3 ભરથાર પહેલાં ભામિની, જે સૂવે સણ્યામાંય; આંધળી ચાકરણ અવતારે, પડે માર્ગ માંય.
  4. 4 ભરથારનું જે કહ્યું ન માને, આપ મતિ જે નારી; તે નારી અવતરે, કોઈ બિલાડી મંજારી.
  5. 5 ભરથાર જે કહ્યું ન માને, કરે તરફોડા કંથ; હડકાઈ કૂતરી અવતરે, એને માથે પડશે જંત.

Translation

ઓખા મનમાં વિચારે છે કે સૂતેલા પ્રિયતમ અનિરુદ્ધને ભરઊંઘમાંથી જગાડવા કે નહીં — અને પછી પોતે જ મન ફેરવે છે કે ના, એ ઠીક નહીં, એ તો બ્રહ્મહત્યા જેવું પાપ ગણાય. જે સ્ત્રી પોતાના પતિ પહેલાં ઊઠીને ભોજન રાંધી ખાઈ લે, તે આગળના જન્મમાં વાગોળ બનીને અવતરે અને ઊંધે માથે લટકી રહે. જે ભામિની પોતાના ભરથાર પહેલાં પથારીમાં સૂઈ જાય, તે આંધળી દાસી બનીને જન્મ લે અને રસ્તામાં ઠોકરો ખાતી ફરે. જે નારી પોતાના પતિની વાત ન માને અને મનફાવે તેમ વર્તે, તે બિલાડી બનીને જન્મ લે. જે સ્ત્રી પતિની આજ્ઞા ન માને અને ઘરમાં કકળાટ કરે, તે હડકાઈ કૂતરી બનીને અવતરે અને એના માથે જૂ-જંત પડ્યા રહે. ઓખા ચિત્રલેખાને કહે છે — 'તું જ બોલ, તારો શો અભિપ્રાય છે? પ્રિયતમ પારણામાં ઘસઘસાટ ઊંઘ્યા હોય અને ત્યાં સાપ કરડવા આવ્યો હોય, ત્યારે શું કરવું?' — એટલે કે ભય હોય ત્યારે જ જગાડવા ઘટે, નહીં તો ઊંઘ ભાંગવી એ ઉચિત નથી.

Okha deliberates within herself about whether to wake Aniruddha from his deep slumber, and then immediately reconsiders, thinking it would be as grave a sin as killing a brahmin to disturb him so. She reflects on the consequences that befall women who transgress the duties of a devoted wife: a woman who rises before her husband and eats food she has cooked without waiting for him will be reborn as a bat, hanging upside down in her next life. A woman who goes to bed before her husband will be reborn as a blind maidservant, stumbling and falling along the road. A woman who ignores her husband's words and acts according to her own wilful mind will be reborn as a cat. And a woman who not only disobeys her husband but also quarrels and creates strife in the home will be reborn as a rabid dog, plagued by lice and vermin crawling over her head. Having laid out all these warnings to herself, Okha turns to Chitralekha and says — 'But you tell me, what is your own opinion? If one's beloved is sleeping soundly in a cradle and a snake comes to bite him, what then?' — meaning that only in a moment of true danger is it right to wake a sleeping husband; otherwise, breaking his rest is not proper.

ओखा मन ही मन सोचती है कि क्या सोए हुए प्रियतम अनिरुद्ध को गहरी नींद से जगाना उचित होगा, और फिर वह खुद ही यह विचार त्याग देती है — ऐसा करना तो ब्रह्महत्या के समान पाप होगा। वह पत्नी के कर्तव्यों का उल्लंघन करने के परिणामों पर विचार करती है: जो स्त्री अपने पति से पहले उठकर भोजन पकाकर खा लेती है, वह अगले जन्म में चमगादड़ बनकर उल्टी लटकती है। जो भामिनी अपने पति से पहले बिस्तर पर सो जाती है, वह अंधी दासी के रूप में जन्म लेती है और रास्ते में ठोकरें खाती फिरती है। जो नारी अपने पति की बात न मानकर अपनी मनमानी करती है, वह बिल्ली बनकर जन्म लेती है। और जो स्त्री पति की आज्ञा की अवहेलना करके घर में कलह मचाती है, वह पागल कुतिया बनकर अवतरित होती है और उसके सिर पर जूँ-कीड़े भरे रहते हैं। इन सब बातों पर विचार करने के बाद ओखा चित्रलेखा से कहती है — 'तू ही बता, तेरा क्या मत है? यदि प्रियतम पालने में गहरी नींद सो रहे हों और वहाँ साँप काटने आ जाए, तब क्या करें?' — अर्थात् सच्चे संकट के समय ही प्रियतम को जगाना उचित है, अन्यथा उनकी नींद तोड़ना उचित नहीं।
