Chitralekha speaks earnestly to Okha, saying, 'Dear friend, listen to me — we are both daughters of great and noble households, so how can we behave in ways that are improper or shameful? A stain upon a woman brings disgrace to the entire family, and one's reputation is destroyed in a single moment. If you continue like this, I will not stay by your side — I will go straight to Banasura and tell him everything. Once Banasura learns of this, it will mean the end for both of us. Your father left me here with you because he trusts you, and yet I see ill omens in you — you are longing to set eyes upon some man. Sister, do not behave like a foolish child; be afraid of your father. I see you intoxicated with desire, not even eating your meals properly; your words do not please me — youth comes to everyone, but it is no excuse for such restlessness. The fire of desire may consume every limb, but sister, let us both conduct ourselves with dignity and restraint. You sit here gazing at the road — but where is there a prison, and how could a husband be found in one? You dismissed my words, plastered dung on your head, and walked away. I only asked what lay behind this longing — sister, keep my counsel in your heart. You look only at what others do, but haste brings no fruit — mangoes do not ripen in a hurry, and we must not take steps too long or too fast.' While such conversations passed between them, the month of Chaitra arrived. Then Okha undertook a solemn vow — the lovely Okha ate only unsalted food each day, lit a lamp, slept upon the bare ground, and devoted herself in worship to Mother Umiya, the goddess Parvati. In this way, at the end of one full month, her vow was completed, and all of this was done in such secrecy that no one came to know of it. The devotee Premanand sings that Okha performed this vow dwelling beside a single pillar, and that in a dream she was united with her lord Aniruddha.

चित्रलेखा ओखा से कहती है, 'बहन, ज़रा सुन तो — हम दोनों बड़े और प्रतिष्ठित घरानों की संतान हैं, तो फिर ऐसा उचित-अनुचित क्यों करें? किसी बहन पर लगा कलंक पूरे कुल में फैल जाता है, और एक ही पल में मान-प्रतिष्ठा मिट्टी में मिल जाती है। अगर तू ऐसे ही चलती रही, तो मैं तेरे पास नहीं रहूँगी — सीधे बाणासुर के पास जाकर सब कुछ बता दूँगी। जब बाणासुर राजा यह जान लेगा, तो हम दोनों का अंत निश्चित है। तेरे पिता ने मुझे तेरे साथ इसलिए रखा है क्योंकि उन्हें तुझ पर भरोसा है — और मैं तुझमें बुरे लक्षण देख रही हूँ, तू किसी पुरुष को देखने की इच्छा रखती है। बहन, यह बचकानी हरकत मत कर, अपने पिता से डर। तुझे देखती हूँ तो मदमस्त लगती है, ढंग से खाना भी नहीं खाती; तेरी बातें मुझे अच्छी नहीं लगतीं — जवानी तो सभी को आती है, पर यह उन्माद का कारण नहीं बनना चाहिए। काम-भाव सारे अंगों पर छा जाता है, लेकिन बहन, हम अपनी मर्यादा में रहें। तू यहाँ बैठकर रास्ता ही निहारती रहती है — पर कारागृह कहाँ होगा, वहाँ कोई पति कैसे मिलेगा? तूने मेरी बात को उड़ा दिया, सिर पर उपले थाप लिए और चली गई। मैंने तो बस यह पूछा था कि इस कामना के पीछे क्या कारण है — बहन, यह बात दिल में रख ले। तू दूसरों की ओर ही देखती रहती है, पर जल्दबाज़ी से काम नहीं बनता — आम जल्दी नहीं पकता, और हमें बड़े-बड़े कदम नहीं उठाने चाहिए।' इस तरह बातें होती रहीं और चैत्र का महीना आ गया। तब ओखाजी ने व्रत धारण किया — सुंदर ओखाबाई प्रतिदिन बिना नमक का भोजन करतीं, दीपक जलाकर धरती पर सोतीं, और माता उमिया-पार्वती की भक्ति-आराधना करतीं। इस प्रकार एक पूरा महीना बीतने पर व्रत सम्पन्न हुआ, और यह सब इतनी एकांत में हुआ कि किसी को कानोंकान खबर न हुई। भक्त प्रेमानंद गाते हैं कि ओखा ने एक स्तंभ के पास निवास करके यह व्रत किया, और स्वप्न में उन्हें अपने स्वामी अनिरुद्ध का संयोग प्राप्त हुआ।
