Pradyumna

Pradyumna is one of the central heroic figures in Premanand's *Okhaharan*, the celebrated seventeenth-century Gujarati narrative poem that retells the story of Aniruddha's captivity in the demon king Banasura's kingdom and the subsequent war waged to rescue him. As the son of Krishna and Rukmini, Pradyumna carries the full weight of divine lineage and martial glory, and Premanand portrays him as a warrior of extraordinary courage and skill who stands at the forefront of the Yadava forces when battle becomes inevitable.

Throughout the poem, Pradyumna's role extends beyond mere physical prowess. Premanand, with his characteristic gift for vivid characterization and emotional depth, presents him as a devoted father anxious for his son Aniruddha's safety, a loyal son acting in concert with Krishna's divine purpose, and a fearless commander who engages formidable opponents without hesitation. His exploits on the battlefield are rendered in Premanand's energetic and melodious Gujarati verse, making him one of the most memorable figures in this beloved work of medieval Vaishnava literature.
